Abstract

The tutorial will explain the field of application and the related research activities associated to a particular Non Destructive Testing (NDT) technique called Magnetic Flux Leakage (MFL). Such NDT is used for the control of ferromagnetic material and a wide typology of components from tubes to ropes is involved.  

In particular, the MFL principle applied to metallic ropes, also called Magneto-inductive (MI), is not a new NDT technique and as been applied from several tens of years in ropeway plants according standards as CEI-EN12927. 

The recent evolution of standards, regarding the discard criteria of metallic ropes in other sector, as in ISO4309, start to introduce the MFL beside visual inspection. Even if the components under control are always ropes, the discard criteria, the rope conformation and the fault typologies can be influenced by the application sector. Different magnetic detectors have been developed in order to satisfy the several technical and practical requirements of the different field of application. 

The tutorial will be introduced by a short summary on magnetic NDT with the scope of classify the presented technology inside the huge world of the NDT.

The tutorial will be divided manly in three parts. In the first one the main aspect related to the  MFL technique will be presented: principle, device description, signals, field of application. The second part of the tutorial will focus on hardware aspect related to the device providing information on numerical magnetic design of detectors.  

In the last part of the tutorial the experience in different field of application, as cableways, cranes and elevator, performed  in the last ten years of activity will be presented.

Since 2004: Associate Professor in Electrical Engineering Science. 

From 2003-2011 he is a member of the managing group of the Prototyping Service Centre of the Politecnico di Torino (CSPP). 

Member of the Comitato Elettrotecnico Nazionale (CEI) serving on Technical Committee CT02 (Rotating Machines)  in the period 1998-2003.

Member of the Comitato Elettrotecnico Nazionale (CEI) serving on Technical Committee CT106 (Methods for the assessment of electric, magnetic and electromagnetic fields associated with human exposure) since 2004.

Member of the "Conference Intenationale des Grands Reseaux Electriques a Haute Tension (CIGRE)" in Working Group 36.04 on "Magnetic field mitigation techniques" during  2002-2005.

President of the Scientific Committee of the Italian Non-Destructive Testing (AIPnD) and member of College of Arbitrators of AIPnD.

2007 - Founder and President (2007-of the Spin Off of Politecnico di Torino: AMC Instruments Ltd. operates in realization of systems for non-destructive testing (www.aemmeci.com).

Associate Editor of IEEE-IAS Power System Engineering Committee and IEEE Senior Member.
